BIO

Skyehaven Shetland Sheepdogs is a small hobby kennel located just south of Winnipeg Manitoba, in the heart of Canada. We are the proud breeders/co-breeders/owners of more than 65 champion Collies and Shelties as well as numerous obedience and performance title holders. We began with a petite sable girl who was linebred Banchory, but over the years have gone in other directions in order to achieve “the look” we love. Our AOAC line was based on some of the great Macdega dogs of the past.

Although we acquired our first companion Sheltie in 1982, we did not become involved in showing and breeding until the acquisition of Cintara’s Kaili of Skyehaven in 1991. Kaili was a 13” dark sable girl who produced three champions for us. Sadly, Kaili’s lineage does not carry on here at Skyehaven. Our sable line traces back to a bitch we purchased from Lynnlea Sheltie in 1993. Annie was pointed in the US but after coming to us, became Canadian Champion Lynnlea’s Crimson N Clover. Our AOAC line traces back to our first homebred AOAC Champion – Ch Skyehaven Ready Or Not ROMC. Kate was the dam of 6 champions, three of which came from her litter sired by Am Ch Mystix Quote Unquote.

Although we have most of the showable colours, we do have more AOACs at this time than we do sables. Our most recent litter consists of three blue merle babies, but we have a sable breeding planned for later this year.

In order to keep our numbers small, we breed only one or two litters per year, and only if/when we feel we are in a position to keep a promising puppy for ourselves. We usually have between 7 and 9 Shelties in residence at any one time. We are active only in the conformation ring, but truly appreciate all the performance activities undertaken by our puppy owners!

We feel very strongly that the future of the breed is paramount. We are at best temporary caretakers, striving to breed the perfect dog (while realizing there are no perfect dogs), and to do no harm to the breed. We feel the encouragement and mentoring of newcomers to the breed is of paramount importance, in order to ensure the breed carries on well into the future.
